All classes are free (except where noted) and open to members, friends, and guests ages 18 and up (Note: some classes are for ages 16 and up).
Starting Point: This introductory course is designed for newcomers who are interested in becoming a member of UUJXN. It offers participants the opportunity to explore their own personal, spiritual journey, learn about the journey of Unitarian Universalism and UUJXN, and to explore how to begin a shared journey together. This course fulfills the Stepping Stones requirements for membership. Please sign up below.
UU 101: A UU Overview: This introductory course is designed for individuals who want to learn more about Unitarian Universalism. Using materials from The New UU series, this class offers participants the opportunity to learn about UU beliefs, history, organization and governance, and approaches to worship, religious education, and social justice. This course fulfills the Stepping Stones requirements for membership and is a self-paced, self-study module. Sign up for the online UU 101 class here or download the UU 101 Workbook for a print copy. Adult Religious Exploration Series: Formal classes are offered periodically on Unitarian Universalism, spirituality, beloved community, and life issues from the Tapestry of Faith curriculum series:
Unitarian Universalism
- Faith Like a River: Themes from Unitarian Universalist History – Explores UU history and considers its legacies and lessons for today.
- Resistance and Transformation: Unitarian Universalist Social Justice History – Explores the history of UU social justice work and our struggle to live up to our ever-evolving ideals of social transformation.
- What Moves Us: Unitarian Universalist Theology – Explores life experiences of historic and contemporary Unitarian Universalist theologians and considers the theological questions that moved each of them.
- What We Choose: Ethics for Unitarian Universalists – Examines ethical concepts, dilemmas, and questions to help clarify and expand knowledge and skills for a process of ethical reflection central to living our UU faith
Spirituality
- Spirit of Life – Uses the lyrics of Spirit of Life as a frame to deepen spiritual awareness and connections.
- Spirit in Practice – Explores disciplines, or practices, of the spirit that help connect with the sacred, however we understand it.
Beloved Community
- Building the World We Dream About – Supports building a multicultural world of beloved community by cultivating participants’ knowledge, skills, and capacity to address issues related to race, ethnicity, and cultural identity as individuals and congregations / Building the World We Dream About for Young Adults – series tailored to the experiences of young adults
- Harvest the Power: Developing Lay Leadership, 2nd Edition – Invites both new and experienced leaders to enrich and deepen their skills to experience leadership as a UU faith journey.
Life Issues
- Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Adults and Sexuality and Our Faith, Adults (IN PRINT) – Builds understanding of healthy sexual relationships, affirms diversity, and helps participants accept and affirm their own sexuality / Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Young Adults, 18-35 and Sexuality and Our Faith, Young Adults (IN PRINT) – Helps participants navigate young adulthood with accurate information, increased self-knowledge, enhanced safety, and strengthened interpersonal skills.
- Principled Commitment – Provides avenues for growing in faith while nourishing committed partnership.
- The Wi$dom Path: Money, Spirit, and Life – Helps participants understand how money can be a more effective force for living lives of meaning and value, and for creating positive change.
- Hindsight, Humor, and Hope: Who, Me, an Elder? – Helps people as they redesign their later years into a time of reflection, discernment, soul stretching, and new life possibilities in becoming an elder, reflecting on deep personal questions such as, Who am I now? and What will I do that is meaningful?
- Facing Death with Life by the Rev. Kate Walker and Lee Ann Wester – Facilitates a process of personal reflection, learning, and spiritual growth focused on the topic of death and dying. Drawing on a variety of contemporary religious and secular resources, participants move from viewing death as an abstract concept to developing a personal recognition of its meaning in their lives.
