UU congregations across Mississippi join together this Sunday in a shared service via Zoom honoring transgender individuals who have lost their lives due to hateful acts of violence. Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Oxford hosts the service. The speaker is Sarah Schnaithman with special music provided by Charles Bowles.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance officially recognized on November 20th, but we’ll be honoring a week early.
Sarah Schnaithman, who herself identifies as a transgender female, serves as the Sunday Services Trustee at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Oxford. Professionally, Sarah is a general practice, bilingual attorney, with her own firm located in Amory, Mississippi. She lives with her wife, Reyna, and two dogs, Mama Dog & Dude, who adopted them, in Aberdeen, Mississippi.
